Notes relating to settlement in Oregon, 1838 Dec 19.

Manuscript notes, written in an unidentified hand, dated at "Indian Office." The notes summarize the presence of Methodist Episcopal missionaries, including Jason Lee, and other American settlers in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, giving names, occupations, size of families, and locations of settlement. Also summarized are the presence of American Indians and Methodist Episcopal missionary work among them; agriculture and climate; and the presence of British forts and British trade with Indians. The manuscript is docketed "Rev. Mr. Lee, from the Columbia River, 19 Dec 1838. See report made by Mr. [William A.] Slacum of the navy in 1836."

Reverend Jason Lee, pioneer Methodist missionary, was born on June 28, 1803 in Stanstead, Quebec. After his ordination in 1834, Jason Lee and his nephew, Daniel Lee, journeyed overland to Oregon to serve the Flathead Indians. It was soon decided to abandon the Flathead mission and establish a new mission in the Willamette Valley.
